This was the era of the illustrator, they could make a good living doing work like this. While many of the ads feature photography, due to the contraints in printing, (there is only one ad in 500 pages that features a full color photograph) the illustration was king. The skill and style you see here is very rare in today's illustration, it simply doesn't pay to be this good.
